Water and Stone

Stone is hard and water is soft.

And yet water wins, wearing away stone as it tumbles endlessly to the sea.

For a time, stone blocks water’s progress, damming it, diverting it, sending it where it would not go on its own.

But water will have its way.

The longer it is resisted the more powerful it becomes, scouring the earth when it finally breaks free.

And it returns. Again and again. Stream.  River.  Sea.  Cloud.  Rain.  Stream.

But fight we stones must.

Our edges are rounded, our sharp edges worn away.

Each time the clouds bring rain we find ourselves further downstream, pushed along by water’s relentless force.

But fight we stones must.

We are stone.

We are hard and water is soft.
